Uttarakashi – Heavenly surroundings with the mighty Himalayas
Uttarakashi is situated on the banks of Mother Ganga at a distance of 199 KM from Dehradoon and 154 KM from Hrishikesh, on the Hrishikesh - Gangotri route. Uttarakashi is well connected with roads from Hrishikesh and Dehradoon. Uttarakashi is a district in the state of Uttarakhand or Uttaranchal, India.
Uttarakashi is a small and beautiful town, situated between two rivers: Varuna and Ashi, whose water flows into the Bhagirathi from either side of the town. Elevated, at a height of 1588 metres, this little town is very similar to Kashi or Varanasi, in that it has the same kind of temples and ghats and likewise, a north or 'uttar' facing river. Lying in the upper Himalayas.
Uttarakashi contains within itself varying geographic environments ranging from snow free valleys and outer hills to the high peaks with perpetual snow and glaciers. Most of the terrain is mountainous consisting of high rise ridges, hills and plateaus and flat pieces of land are rare.
Nature expresses itself in breath-taking variations from beauteous landscapes luxuriously decked with vegetation punctuated by streams, brooks and rivers to high rise awesome rocky ridges and mountains gently tapering off into hefty snow-capped peaks.
Forests occupy a place of pride in the environment of the district not only for the sheer bulk of the area they occupy but also for the richness of variety of vegetation.
Uttarakashi district gives rise to two great and reverent rivers of India the Bhagirathi, called Mother Ganga in the plains and the Mother Yamuna. Mother Ganga coming up from the glaciers of `Gaumukh' traverses 128 KM through Uttarakashi district before flowing down farther.
